Murmur are possibly the most self restrained and least derivative operators in dub techno right now, and over the course of a handful of scarce twelves they've slowly gestated a frayed hybrid of minimal construction and fathomless BASS that has less in common with the hallowed Basic Channel axis then the work of most of their contemporaries. Opening track "Pansula" takes its time and slowly unfolds around aged and ragged dub chords, the analogue detritus and barely audible hum of their machines making the kind of unpredictably lovely sound you'd expect from a bank of old synths and decrepit wires slowly coming to life. "Mesh" is up next and provides the album with its clearest nod towards Maurizio complete with a rugged kickdrum and elongated dub stagger, but even here the emphasis is on self restraint and space, at low volumes adopting a kind of intense languid narcosis, becoming more propulsive, robust and exhilarating the louder it gets. "Flex" provides another Minimal variation, this time revisiting classic Klang signatures with modified Sino melodies and soft pads managing to bring to mind Baby Ford and Rob Hood in one fell swoop, while "Shift" is dominated by intense, layered dub chords, almost enveloping the track in a kind of classic fuzzy warmth that's just immense. "Bloodclot" is the most fierce offering on board, the hi-hats making their first significant appearance a good 8 tracks into the album and imbuing proceedings with a motorik drive that seems to have been honed and perfected for the Panorama Bar at peak time - staggered chords included. "Undertone" is clearly one of the years most significant dub techno releases (and it really barely fits under that bracket), a towering achievement crowning a year that's already given us essential material from the likes of the Styrax, Mojuba, SYNTH and Echospace labels, and is a perfect counterpoint to the year's other big release in this field - Deepchord's brilliant "Coldest Season". An introduction from the artists: "Max Loderbauer and Tobias Freund, two very experienced musicians, recently ventured upon their first piano drone project together, NSI. non standard institute, plays non standards. Max Loderbauer studied music and sound engineering, was Germany’s serviceman for the Fairlight sampler, toured Europe, America and Japan as „Sun Electric“ together with TomThiel from 1990 to 2000, one of his latest releases was „Chica and the folder“. Tobias Freund worked as a sound engineer for 18 years, is „Sieg über die Sonne“ together with Martin Schopf and releases projects as „Pink Elln“, together with „Atom Heart“, and his latest project „Tobias.“ Their both scientists in sounds returning to where they feel most at home in the analog acoustic world. Their puristic approach to electronic music is not only very refreshing, but also very pure and sophisticated. Max Loderbauer was improvising and creating excellently on a grand piano. Tobias Freund is responsible for the treatments and sounds of: Roland DEP 5, Lexicon LXP 5, Roland TR 808. „ We like to put ourselves into a live, one shot, situation. Luciano's first CD label mix and retrospective 'Contemporary 0.1 & Classics' is set for release in October.

Disc one, 'Contemporary 0.1', is a Luciano mix of recent Cadenza tracks as well as a sneak peek at some upcoming tracks on the label. The mix features two tracks from Romanian newcomers Petre Inspirescu and Rhadoo - keep an eye out on that country - as well as Cadenza regulars Digitaline, Argenis Brito and Luciano himself.

Disc two, 'Classics' is an unmixed selection of previous Cadenza hightlights such as N.S.I's 'Max Binski', Quenum & Lee Van Dowski's 'Extension' and a mini best-of-Luciano including the club classics 'Orange Mistake' and 'Bomberos'.

That difficult second album then. Not content with having to follow-up on the success of his staggering debut, the kind of uncontrollable hyperbole electronic musicians have rarely had to deal with and the small matter of keeping his identity concealed from all but his closest friends (and some of those apparently don't even know), Burial has just gone and produced an album that appeared on first listen to satisfy even our most unreasonable expectations and, on repeat play, surpass them. "Untrue" is a much more emotive beast than its eponymous predecessor, a mood augmented by the vocal emphasis present on all but the short interlude tracks included on the cd edition. The most startling of these is the much-discussed "Archangel", a track framed by one of Burial's most devastating submerged-woodblock rhythms to date and devoured by an androgynous auto-tuned vocal that not only highlights Burial's spiritual descendance from UK Garage and 2-step but also his uncanny ability to create archetypal songs from the darkest, most foreign ingredients. As the legend goes, these pieces were all recorded deep into the night and the uncontrollable sense of loneliness and longing seeps out of every pore of this incredible collection of tracks. There's an overwhelming sense that, much like the abandoned streets and hazy luminescence of early-hours London, all normal rules of engagement have been suspended both musically and spiritually. This is music with a powerful, almost narcotic urge to connect with the outside world, like an emotional sleep-paralysis that imbues these pieces with an outsider aesthetic that seems neither forced nor self-aware, but beautifully ingenuous. And this is ultimately why (despite almost universal acclaim and legions of followers) no one has even attempted to copy Burial's signature sound - it's so removed from the everyday, daylight machinations of music-making that to have done so would have just been absurd. Towards the end of the album the majestic narcosis of the title track (an incredible piece of music that seems to squash a million different emotions into a barely contained mass of midnight percussion and exhausted narrative) makes way for "Shell of Light" - the cathartic turning point of the album and a quietly overwhelming push into slowly emerging daylight. The effect is both joyous and utterly startling, and ultimately extremely moving. Beyond all the myth-making and emotive resonance - "Untrue" is also an album that manages to offer percussive innovation and a submerged deviant funk that you will be as powerless to resist as we were on first listen - and if a better album has been released in 2007, we've yet to hear it.
